Safer Migration (SAMI) Project

Nepal Federation of Savings & Credit Co-operative Unions Ltd (NEFSCUN) is the member based national apex body of savings & Credit Co-operatives Societies (SACCOS) in Nepal. For the development & promotion of sustainable SACCOS in Nepal, it has undertaken the various strategies. Financial Inclusion is one of the major strategies of NEFSCUN to channelize the local people to the SACCOS. Under this background, NEFSCUN is collaborating with the different stakeholders having the common interest.

HELVETAS Swiss Interco-operation NEPAL with the support from Swiss Agency for Development and Co-operation (SDC) is implementing Safer Migration Project (SaMi)-Phase II. This is a bi-lateral initiative of government of Nepal and Government of Switzerland and part of the project is also implemented by Ministry of Labour and Employment (MoLE). The project neither intends to discourage Nepali citizens nor does it intend to encourage for foreign employment. It intends to support Nepali potential migrants, both women and men by providing them with accurate and relevant information on foreign employment. The project focuses on the different dimension of the safer migration.

The present economic situation of Nepal is almost depends on remittance and most of the remittance is consumed in unproductive sectors. So, the project intends to provide vocational skills to the potential migrants with the aim to increase in saving and productive use of remittance through financial literacy.

The NEFSCUN & SaMi/HELVETAS made an agreement to deliver the financial literacy training package in the selected districts of project. Under the financial support of SaMi/HELVETAS, NEFSCUN has developed the training manual and other training resources. Now the project is undergoing in 6 districts Khotang, Dhanusha, Ramechhap, Sarlahi, Nawalparasi and Kailali. The project period is started from September 4, 2014 & will remain till June 15, 2016.
